Austropop

Austropop is a broad umbrella for popular music from Austria, typically sung in German and often in regional dialects, where catchy pop and rock meet a distinctly Austrian sense of storytelling, humor, and everyday realism. Emerging strongly in the 1970s, it spans radio-friendly ballads and singalong choruses as well as folk-rooted sounds, cabaret-like wordplay, and sharper satirical or political edges. Musically it can range from classic guitar rock to accordion-tinged folk, punk energy, and modern chart pop, but it’s usually united by vivid lyrics, local identity, and an unpretentious, down-to-earth tone.
