Bengali Folk

Bengali folk is the traditional song culture of Bengal, shaped by village life, seasonal festivals, and devotional mysticism. It spans Baul and Fakiri songs of wandering minstrels, Jhumur dance tunes, boatmen’s and harvest songs, and poetic “lokgeeti” rooted in oral storytelling. Lyrics often blend love, social commentary, and spiritual searching—sometimes influenced by reformist and revolutionary poetry—delivered in an intimate, direct vocal style. Music is typically driven by rhythmic hand percussion and earthy string/pipe textures (ektara, dotara, khol, dhol, flute), with call-and-response and trance-like grooves that invite participation.
