California Hardcore

California hardcore is a raw, fast, and confrontational strain of hardcore punk rooted in the state’s late-’70s/’80s scene and continually reinvented by newer bands. It blends breakneck tempos, jagged riffs, and shout-along vocals with a street-level sense of urgency—often swapping punk’s loose swing for tight, percussive drum attacks and heavy, palm-muted guitars that border on metal. Lyrics tend to be blunt and personal, hitting alienation, paranoia, social decay, and survival, while the live ethos is physical and communal: short songs, packed rooms, and nonstop momentum. Despite its aggression, it’s defined by DIY spirit and constant cross-pollination with skate, thrash, and modern beatdown.
