Canto A Tenore

Canto a tenore is a traditional Sardinian vocal style, especially associated with Barbagia, built around four male voices singing in tight, resonant harmony: the soloist (oche) carries the melody and text, while three accompanying parts (mesu oche, contra, bassu) create a dense, buzzing drone with overtone-rich timbres that can resemble throat singing. Performed a cappella in a circle, its sound shifts between earthy growls and bright nasal tones, often using call-and-response phrasing and subtle rhythmic pulses. Repertoire includes pastoral, devotional, and social songs, typically sung in Sardinian dialects at festivals and community gatherings.
