Jazz Tico

Jazz tico is Costa Rica–rooted jazz that blends modern improvisation with the country’s Afro-Caribbean and Central American rhythms, often drawing on calypso, cumbia, bolero, and folk dance grooves alongside swing and contemporary harmony. Its sound can move from intimate, lyrical horn and piano lines to percussion-forward ensembles where marimba-like colors, hand drums, and syncopated bass patterns push the music into bright, street-level momentum. Arrangements tend to be melodic and story-driven, but leave space for adventurous solos, odd-meter vamps, and genre-crossing textures that reflect San José’s cosmopolitan scene and the coastal pulse of Limón.
