Música jíbara is a traditional genre of music originating from the mountainous regions of Puerto Rico. It is the heart and soul of Puerto Rican folk culture, expressing the rural life and experiences of the jíbaro, or countryside people. Characterized by emotive, narrative lyrics, it often includes instruments such as the cuatro (a ten-stringed guitar), the güiro (a grooved gourd scraper), and bongos or panderos. Música jíbara's melodies and harmonies are deeply influenced by Spanish, African, and Indigenous heritage, blending storytelling with the rhythms of the island. Its most iconic form is the seis, a dance rhythm with various regional styles. Through artists like Chuito El De Bayamon and Victoria Sanabria, música jíbara maintains its vitality, connecting generations with timeless themes of love, nature, and everyday life.
