Sarod

Sarod is a resonant and expressive stringed instrument central to North Indian classical music, characterized by a deep, weighty sound and a capacity for producing continuous slides between notes, known as meend. Its body is carved from wood, topped with a skin face, and strung with metal strings, played with a plectrum. The genre, led by maestros such as Amjad Ali Khan and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, employs intricate finger techniques and a rich repertoire rooted in ancient ragas. Each performance is a mix of composed material and spontaneous improvisation, showcasing the artist's virtuosity and deep emotional connection to the music. Through genres such as Dhun and Gat, the sarod can conjure a range of moods, from meditative to intensely rhythmic, embodying the depth and dynamism of Indian classical traditions.
