Tanci

Tanci is a traditional Chinese narrative singing-and-speaking genre rooted in the Jiangnan region, performed by one or more artists who alternate rhythmic speech with melodic lines to tell long, character-rich stories. Accompanied by small-string instruments such as pipa and sanxian (often with light percussion), tanci blends folk tunes with dramatic pacing, using vivid dialogue, humor, and quick shifts in tone to portray multiple roles. Performances can range from short comic episodes to extended historical or romantic sagas, prized for clear diction, intricate storytelling, and the intimate, conversational feel that draws listeners into the plot.
