Trouvère music, stemming from the tradition of medieval poets and composers in northern France during the 12th and 13th centuries, represents the refined courtly love songs of the time. These troubadours of the north, largely aristocrats or well-educated clerics like Gautier de Coincy or Thibaut de Champagne, crafted lyric poetry which they often set to music. The genre is characterized by themes of chivalry and courtly love, with performances that were typically vocal and accompanied by instruments such as the lute or psaltery. The linguistic medium was Old French, and the music, surviving in manuscripts, reveals a complex melodic and rhythmic sophistication. The trouvères contributed significantly to the development of the chanson and the motet, leaving a lasting imprint on the evolution of Western music.
